Last night (May 4, 2017), Evelyn and I caught a performance of the SFJazz Collective at the St. Cecilia Music Hall in downtown Grand Rapids. The ensemble is a super-group consisting of some of the most talented jazz musicians currently on the scene. Musical selections were inspired by jazz legend Miles Davis and featured both arrangements of Davis compositions and originals from the members.
Following the concert, we attended a brief reception and were able to meet and talk with members of the SFJazz Collective. We spent some time with Alto saxophonist Miguel Zenon and discussed the collective’s current seasonal tour and his personal efforts to encourage jazz appreciation in Puerto Rico, where he was born.
The experience was well worth the attendance. I appreciated the collective’s performance which was able to deliver both elements of innovation and entertainment in music. It was very inspiring.
