As part of the Bob Reynolds Virtual Studio, I participated in an ongoing transcription challenge to augment my musical studies. Transcribing entails learning musical concepts by ear (Real Books be damned) and recording them to share with other musicians in training.
Besides being able to learn new concepts, recorded transcriptions allow opportunities for feedback as well as self evaluation by listening to yourself; many of your personal challenges become clear (intonation, articulation, timing, dynamics, etc.). This particular challenge was no exception.
The challenge was learning the melody to the tune Hot House, a bebop standard written by Tadd Dameron and performed by Charlie Parker & Dizzy Gillespie. Hot House is a reharmonization of the popular song What is this Thing Called Love.
